Once the boot is torn, the joint is likely to go quickly due to the wear of dirt and water getting in there. You might want to just replace the entire half shaft with a rebuilt assembly considering the age of the car. www.rockauto.com has the left half shaft assembly for $65 plus shipping, and you will have to pay return freight on the core. You could also price the assembly at your local auto parts stores. John
