Subject: Slight delay before engaging in 'D' '87 9000

This one's got 125K on it so I know that the tranny has seen better days ; ) but I'd like to know what is causing the slight delay (maybe 3 seconds) when I put the shifter in 'D' or '1' before the automatic tranny engages into 1st gear. Is this the symptom of a worn torque convertor? Thanks for any advice. Mark
