I had a similar problem on my '85 900, except on mine the control rod would disconnect itself from time to time because the valve was stiff. It was a bit of a fiddle and time consuming to reconnect it. A quick fix to turn the heat on or off was to lift out the L/H speaker and turn the valve by hand.
