Subject: clunking in rear -- 1984 900S

Tried this on's C900 bulletin board, but didn't get any responses yet (and there's so much traffic on that site it'll probably get lost in the shuffle now): I have a loud clunking noise in the left rear wheel area over big bumps, and we have a lot of very bumpy roads in Providence. Sometimes it even happens during hard right-hand turns with only the slightest bump or depression in the road. It's almost like a scraping/clunking sound on the bigger bumps. It's not a "knocking" sound, like suspension bushings. It's a thump. Rear shocks and springs and exhaust system are less than two years old, and work fine so I don't think anything in the suspension is broken. I can't get it to make the noise when I grab the tail pipe and move it around. Any ideas? Thanks, -jw -- 1984 900S hatchback Rhode Island
