The standard test for a weak fuel pump - hard : start problem is to do what you did: turn it on, let the pump run : for a minute to build pressure, then try to start it. They theory is : that the pump is weak and doesn't fill the line enough quickly after : the nightly drain down. Once the line is full, the weak pump can : keep up with the flow so that operation if not affected greatly. It's definitely the best theory I've heard so far. One thing I noticed this morning was that when I start the car, it runs for a few seconds, and then when the secondary air injection kicks on, it dies.
