Does the car need one? any reason i > couldnt just take it out for the summer? It does need one. A lot of people do remove them, but it's not a good idea. It'll mean the engine will take much longer to reach operating temp, which is not good for it (poor fuel economy, thicker oil > more wear, other factors). If you're going to take it out, put a new one in at the same time. Also replace the fan switch with an 82deg C one. While you're at it, disconnect the rad top + bottom hoses, and flush it with lots of water. Put in 40% coolant/water. All this should take an hour tops, and not cost more than say $30 in parts.
