I've had somewhat similar symptoms when the rear fuel pump has failed. It gets loud enough to be heard while driving and then engine problems begin. I've had symptoms as if the engine was having a vapor lock problem and, in the most recent failure, the engine stopped completely for a moment before resuming operation.
