Subject: electrical problem?

In the past I have had problems with accidentally leaving the rocker cabin light switch on after parking my 1986 900S. I found it to be fairly easy not to notice the light was on... Recently I replaced the battery. But now I found another way to cause a problem. I can always pull my key out of the ignition whether the car is running or not. As I was parking, I killed the engine and then remembered I wanted to eject the disc in my cd player. So I turned the key slighty, to get control on the stereo, and accidentally left the car in that state for several hours. When I returned, I had no power in the car at all, including the power locks, ignition etc. Even after jumping the car I couldn't get the faintest response. I suspected my jumper cables were bad, and tried two other sets. So now I think I might have an electrical problem. My manual suggests ways to go about troubleshooting the electrical system, but I am wondering if anyone on this list has an idea of what might have happened based on the story I have told. Is there a special kind of damage I might have done? Is it more likely to be something I can fix myself? I can tow it to a shop if necessary. Unfortunately I'm not particularly inclined towards fixing car problems. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Dave
