Subject: I love my '88 900 Turbo Convertible, but.....

This is an extraordinary car, bought it "way rough" and working out the kinks. Fixed the vacuum problems causing it to stall, put on some new Michelins, installed a new stayfast top, repaired the convertible motor, un-jammed the rear windows, replaced the sagging upholstery on the door panels, and glued some roofing tiles in the floorboard to keep the water off my feet. ALMOST PERFECT! I've got just a few things to go when out of the blue, I get a 'no-start' condition. Noted that the fuel pump wasn't running, so bypassed it according the to manual - it ran, checked the relays - good, traced it down to what I thought was an ECU not applying ground to the fuel pump relays to activate - replaced the ECU with a junker - no good. Walked out to the car the next AM, figured what the heck, give it a turn, and voila, she's running like a champ. Take it around the block, all is well, turbo's a blastin' - radio's a cranking (on 3 of the 4 speakers, unless I bang on the dash and get the 4th going) - Just managed to cram it into 5th gear - wow, I'm in SAAB heaven. Only problem is now, I can't trust the darn thing. I've since seen it quit two other times, never while running - So my options are to turn it off and take the chance it won't restart, or to leave it running (this option can burn a lot of gas, but could have the benefit of someone taking off in it, and allowing me to take advantage of all those overpayments I've been making to the ins. co. all those years) Anyway, if anybody has some ideas for me on this car to restore my confidence, I'd appreciate the help. I really do love the car and want to keep it, I'm just not that fond of walking, unless I choose the time and place. Best thing we've come up with lately is a heat related problem - like a vapor lock (or is that just a mechanic's term for I have no earthly idea??) The car came equipped with NO gas cap, and I put one on from a 92 900, fits, but who knows. TIA - Bill - Scorned SAAB lover
