The reason I asked, is that there is a known common-ish defect in that range of transmissions where the pinion bearing wears, and makes a hars, road speed-dependant noise, changing as go from accelleration to engine braking. If the chain transmission store didn't know this and wants to charge you 800 bucks to "take a look", I would question their experience with the Saab 900. Do you have a Saab dealer or specialist/independant anywhere nearby? Where in the world are you, maybe someone here can suggest a shop. Not saying the chain guy might not get it right, but I'd ask how many dozens of them he's done. If he wants to get at the differential, that sounds like the problem area is right in the ring/pinion, and the pinion bearing would be the prime suspect. Sometimes a Saab specialist will save you money, this might be one of those times. Dave Hinz
