Subject: Re: Head Gasket Job

>My local Saab shop says my engine may need the head gasket replaced ($1,000 job). You don't say what year/model, but I had this done about a year or so ago and my shop only charged $550 on a 900T. I think your garage may be a bit steep. >I declined for now but I expect it won't be long before I regret it. Maybe, maybe not...... >Is this something that can be attempted by the home mechanic (me?). I didn't bother, but for $1000 I might. There is a bit to it, if you haven't removed a head before I'd prolly leave it to a pro..... You will also need to worry about if the head is warped at all - sometimes that is what the issue is. Usually you can send them out to the machine shop for a shave to get them flat again, unless of course that's already been done once before. There are a lot of little things like that which would lead me to have the pros do it. >What book or repair manual would help me the most? I'd go for the Bentley book. I've got the Haynes and it is pretty much worthless. I always find what I need in the Bentley book. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0837603137/qid=1059872129/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-1251691-9961605?v=glance&s=books Hope this helps. >Thanks, >Paul
