He should have opened the door using the key, ignored the alarm siren (*), and inserted the key in the ignition. When the car recognizes the transponder imbedded in the key it will turn off the alarm. The remote control is just a convenience. (*) The non-US 9-5 does not turn off the alarm if the key is used to open the door. The US version does.
