Postscript - yes, the turbo was in fact ****ed. a kindly soul of a mechanic fitted a recon. one for £200, which ain't bad. unfortunately the vacuum bottle and exhaust now need attention. and I didn't even know what a vacuum bottle was until i felt it vibrating. It really is one thing after another.
