Subject: Poor Workmanship

Last week I had a classic 900 [1993] towed in by the AA, No oil pressure. A quick look around showed a lack of oil flowing round the engine so I took the oil pump off and found that it had injested something and killed the pump. Speaking to the owner it appears that 3 months ago he was driving up the M6 when his head gasket failed. He was towed into a garage who were nominated by the AA, Head gasket failure was confirmed and they set about repairs. The customer said while the head is off would they inspect the timing chain and rectify if needed, The garage stated that a new chain was needed as the bottom timing gear was missing a tooth!. 3 days later the garage rang to say that a new timing chain cover was needed as the original was cracked. [Levering the cover off without removing all the bolts I wager], cost £340.00 for the cover alone. Cover was on back order for 3 months, so he got the car back last week, Got as far as the A21, No oil pressure. Found the following: 2 Bolts missing from the oil pump Lower part of the engine mounting on the r/h side that fits to the gearbox and holds the lower power steering pump mounting was missing altogether! Ferrules missing off the exhaust manifold studs and replaced by oversize nuts. Water pump gasket and cam cover gasket replaced by RTV No Thermostat Camshaft gear fixing bolts locktited in, making it almost immpossible to remove them without causing damage. Total bill came to £1559.25. When asked about the engine mounting, the following reply was forthcoming, "We did refit the bracket, it must have become loose and dropped off". So the top half of the bracket unbolts itself allowing the lower half to come off, then the upper half refits itself and self tightens the bolts up. Magic. If the owner wins his case I will name the garage in question, Regards Tom.
