That was probably the best first step to take to see if that solves the problem. The gasket on the original cap may have become worn and no longer made a proper seal. New cars (in the US) are required to have sensors to make sure the fuel tank is sealed to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from evaporating fuel. It doesn't matter that it is generic as long as it fits properly and makes a good seal. Walt Kienzle 1991 9000T - also with a "generic" gas cap that I inherited from the previous owner.
