Subject: Re: Oil sludge, engine shot?

I dont know how you could gum up a high revving 4 banger like that unless, all 64 k miles were driven at a crawl or it has a lot more miles than shown..or...your oil was somehow contaminated at some time. I once knew a guy who never changed his oil filter, it plugged up and then the engine started to gum up but that took well over a 100K. As for skipping an occasional oil change, todays oils are easily capable of handling it. Here is a tip I learned from a great old mechanic. It will not hurt your engine or seals and will keep it sparkling clean. Just before each oil change, run the engine until it is at full operating temp. Pour in half a liter of (new) transmission fluid. Tranny fluid is high in detergents. Drive for 15-20 minutes and then drain the oil...and be sure to change the filter. Dont rev too high as the crank case will be slightly overfull and you dont want the oil to foam. Keep it under 4K. You will be amazed at what will come out of your engine. Check the colour and texture of your oil before and after you do this and you will see what I mean. The first time you do it, it will come out as black as coal tar. I have been doing this for 30 years and every engine has outlasted the body of the car. I have never lost an engine, bearing , seal , crank or timing chain. In winter I use synthetic and during the summer I use regular oil. Oil and filter are always changed together at 4 month intervals or 5K miles which ever comes first. Almost forgot, I have always used nothing but Castrol.
