Why would you take a chance like that for such a simple job? Ever > hear the phrase, "Penny wise, pound foolish?" > > -Fred W > I'm the aluminum foil person. I'm sure you'll be relieved to hear that nothing bad happened, and of course I did keep an eye on the temperature guage. The Saab specialist is a $20 one-way cab ride away, and that adds $40 to every repair there. I continue to think that the removal of a malfunctioning thermostat and its replacement with a new one is a routine job, well within the capability of schmucks at gas stations. In fact, a while back I was told in this very news group that it probably was even within my own capability, and doubtless I am even lower on the automotive evolutionary scale.. The symptoms I had with my 1996 900 SE were as follows: (1) On cold days the needle would take a very, very long time to move out of the extreme cold end of the temperature guage. (2) While driving around the city, it would eventually creep up a little, but the heater would deliver little effective heat. (3) On cold days, while driving longer distances at higher speeds, the needle would sink back into the cold zone, presumably because the cold air was rushing through the radiator, and its effects were not being blocked by the malfunctioning thermostat All these symptoms were cured by a new thermostat.
