Subject: Clutch Problem?

I have a 1996 Saab 900S 2.3L. I was driving today, and all of a sudden, my RPM's went to about 5000RPM without a corresponding increase in car speed. My car wouldn't go past 35mph, and it smelt of burning rubber whenever the RPM's went past 3000. I think it might be the clutch, or could it possibly just be low clutch fluid? I haven't checked that yet, but can anybody help me out and let me know if the whole clutch has to be replaced? Also, how much will it cost if I need a whole new clutch? Thanks.
