I had one and it was the last year of the inexpensive headlights and parking brake on the front wheels. Now that I own an SPG, the "S" certainly stands for slow. I looked at Saabs later and the 900 was discontinued a few years later, with the "base" model being the 900S, with leather and sunroof standard. I also have a 1990 900S, with the 16 Valve engine and parking brake on the rear axle (handbrake turns). The interesting story about the 1986 900 was the emissions testing. The technician put the front wheels on the rollers, got it up to speed and then made sure the parking brake on. The look of his face was priceless as he stalled the engine everytime . . . I did stop another technician when he put the front wheels of my rear wheel drive 245 on the rollers and was about to get it up to speed for the emissions test.
