Subject: Pulling a 900 out of the weeds

I just found a 86 900 4-door in the tall grass with a For-Sale sign on the windshield. My wife says I can keep it so I think I'm going to bring it on home. It looks a bit tired but not too rusty and I didn't see too much backyard wiring in the engine bay. The kid that owns it says it runs ok but that 3rd gear in the 5-speed is broken. I presume the synchro-mesher is trashed from him trying to speed shift it. I might be able to scrounge up a tranny but if not, are all the synchro mesh units the same inside the case? I've had a Saab 4-speed apart once years ago and I bet I could just replace the chewed up part if it comes down to it. I'm thinking if the synchro-mesh units are all the same (and they look identical AFAIK) it might be easier to find another junk tranny and scavenge it for parts. Anybody here ever rebuilt 900 5-speeds that would care to comment? -- Remove the lock from my email to reply
