There is an external reservoir of fluid which acts as a *Master* piston (when you press the clutch pedal) to operate a ... b. *slave* cylinder which also acts as a piston which presses some very heavy springs. I know this won't make much sense but it does not matter for now. Either of these two *cylinders* can be faulty and the symptoms you describe are exactly what would cause them. I don't know if the garage can work out if the external pump *Master Cylinder* is good or not. If it is the *Slave cylinder* it is inside the gearbox. The cost of the cylinder may be cheap (relatively speaking) but the labour charges are high because the gearbox would have to come out. If the gearbox is taken out it would be advisable to replace the clutch too. ANYONE familiar with the 9K ... does it share master cylinder for both brakes and clutch? HOWEVER!!! You say they did the brakes. What exactly did they do the brakes? Did they replace any pipes, did they replace the fluid? One possible cause for the problem could be air in the hydraulic system which would also cause the symptoms you describe. It could be that air has got in as a result of the brakes job (but the problem should have manifested itself as soon as you left the garage) or the bleeding valve for the clutch has been loosened so air got in gradually. The cheapest job would be to bleed the clutch system and see if it cures the problem. If not ... then you may have to spend some serious money. Regards Charles PS. I know it does not help much but £500 cars are for those who can DIY them. -- Please remove _removeme_ to reply.
