Subject: 91 Saab 900 NA Clutch job price discrepancy?

Hello all, I recently bought a '91 900 (non-turbo) with 162,000 miles. The clutch is on its way out, and several mechanics in the Boston area have quoted me close to $1,000 for repair. However, from searching on Saabnet as well as this newsgroup, the general consensus seems to be that a classic 900 clutch replacement is an easy and cheap job. Why does $1,000 seem like such an inflated price to me? One Saab mechanic told me he could "cheat" and just replace the clutch disc - but claimed that it's absolutely essential to replace the slave cylinder (which makes up about $400 of the job's cost), and I would "assume all the risks" of not doing so. What do you all think? I probably only plan to keep the car another year (I'm a poor student) and would like to find the most cost effective solution. Should I just "cheat" and skip the slave cylinder? Thanks! Pravin Pant
