Malfunction', what this means needs your dealer to do some work and diagnose the actual fault from the error code rather than just read off what the OBDII unit says. Have you a warranty with the car? This site gives you a description of the fault; http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/generic/p0420-catalyst-efficiency- below-threshold-bank-1.php In summary, the second lambda probe that is located after the catalyst is detecting that the catalyst is not performing as well as it should (worst case, your cat is shot and the car will fail its next emissions test but it could be much more trivial than that).
