What makes air conditioning work:
Remember: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. I forget who said it.

The short story:

• Compress a gas
  • the gas becomes denser and hotter
• Remove some of the heat
  • the beauty of the gasses used as refrigerants is that they will then condense into a liquid
• Spray the liquid through a small orifice to decrease the pressure
  • another beauty of refrigerants: Lowering the pressure turns them back into a gas
    • The ultimate beauty: When a liquid turns into a gas, heat is released and the gas becomes cold
• Flow the cold gas through a "radiator" (just a length  of pipe with radiating fins attached)
• Pull air over the cold fins to make the air cold
• Blow the cooled air into the car

Now what could be simpler than that?
