There's a rubber coupler in the shift linkage between the shifter and transmission that deteriorates and can cause shifting problems. Hopefully it's just that.
I think pretty much any C900 5-speed can fit but there are differences in the linkage like whether shifter centering springs are internal or external. I had a rebuilt 1989 transmission installed in my 1986 900S about 20 years ago and it's still tight and quiet. (The rest of a C900 is pretty much solid as an anvil, but the transmissions are like tissue paper in comparison. Starting in 1989 they came with larger pinion bearings which helped.)
