OK, Does look good but looks can be deceiving. Have someone shift through all the gears while you watch the coupling for spreading. If the coupling is intact then you should next check the adjustment of the shift linkage. In a 1986 C900 that involves putting the transmission in third gear and then exposing the shift lever compartment below the carpeting and inserting a pin through a hole if possible. If you can't put the pin through the hole then you must loosen the pinchbolt on the coupling and jiggle the linkage until you can insert the pin and then tighten the pinchbolt and remove the pin. That process synchronizes the shift lever with the transmission. You can have the problem you're describing if those are not synchronized. The hole for the pin is under the rubber bellows and carpeting just ahead of the shift lever.
