My wife will be pleased to know that she was not the only one to be fooled by this. She knew of the Night Panel feature; she uses it regularly at night. What she did not realize is that the feature does not just turn off the dash lights it disables the instruments themselves. This of course is sensible; if you can't see them why should they be working. So, when she unknowingly hit the Night Panel button in the day time (likely while activating the cup holder), she was startled to see all the needles drop to their rest positions. She thought she was doomed, but when the car continued to function she kept driving and after a bit figured it out.
