I think "uninsured" coverage is mandatory.
Call your insurance company. I did when I got hit and run. I called cops to file the police report and called insurance company and gave them that report number. My premium stayed the same as it should be. It's not your fault. Only thing I can think of that make sense to why the premium will go up is if you claim it all the time. If they had to fix your car for hit and run everytime you get a ding on your door from a parking lot, your premium might go up. (Assuming your deductive is $100 or less for door ding repairs...)
Unless you go thru the insurance company, you are going to end up doing shabby work. Not because you can't pay, but body shop slacks off if you pay for all of it. I think it's because when going thru insurance, their customer is big insurance company and body shop doesn't want them to know they do shabby work and therefore insurance company recommends other body shop. Also, insurance company gurantees the work, so if it comes back crappy, you can get it re-done. That's gonna be hard to do if you are individual trying to fight the shady body shop.
