I tried various octanes after purchasing my 9-3 because of what it said in the owner's manual, but noticed better performance with premium. I've owned turbocharged automobiles for over 18 years and find the best performance and fuel economy with premium. Regular fuel seems to detune the engine to the point that I think "why bother with a turbo." With regular or midgrade, the engine uses more fuel because it is working harder (so to speak). The better quality fuels (e.g. Chevron) use better detergents so the fuel system stays clean and moisture free, and the higher octane enables the car to run as it was designed. When I need 100% of the engine's available power, I usually need all of it NOW. That performance is only available with premium fuel.
