The head bolts had a problem with being loose on the earlier OG9-3s and they fixed for the last model year ('02). I think '02 is the last year for a 3 door (they aren't that common tho) and all '02s are SEs. There are Viggens out there from all 4 years ('99-'02), check the classifieds for postings. There've been some sludging problems related to maintainance neglect as well as sporadic reports of Viggen abuse, so definitely get the car checked out.
Check the classifieds here on Saabnet, there are a couple midwest Viggens posted now. Getting an SE will be a lot easier, as the '02s are coming back off of lease right now.
For what it's worth I have a 5 door 9-3 and it doesn't make me miss my 3 door C900 one bit. The handling isn't quite as tight, but there are some pretty basic mods (sway bar, steering rack brace, etc.) that can fix that up quickly. The Turbo fun is a major bonus though, it's an awesome car. Good luck with your Saab hunt and be sure to post pictures when you finally track it down.
