I have an automatic. From what I've heard the 9000 Aeros were sweet and fast even stock, so you may find that the 9-3 Aero is not as fast as you are used to - only you can decide that. I get MPG's in the low 20's with automatic in a mix of city/hwy driving, and I have a lead foot. That said on long interstate trips where I reset the SID and cruise at about 75 I get into the high 20's if not over 30. The first day I got the car I was going from Atlanta to Knoxville and got over 30 MPG.
I've had no problems with the drivetrain but just small issues, a sunroof with bad insulation from the factory (fixed on first try) and now a driver window that won't roll down (fixing it today). I totally dig this car and it handles great.
If you can take one on a test drive and make sure you hit some twisties at speed. You can feel the ReAxs and it really makes the back end of the car feel like it's on rails and completely connected to what your steering input is doing. Definitely a great evolution in handling from the older 9-3 platform. I now officially wish I'd gotten a manual but the auto is handy for interstate crawls during commute.
