I had a '98 NG900 SE coupe that I got used and an '01 Viggen that I then traded for my current '04 9-3SS Aero. One of the reasons I traded the Viggen was the aged platform on which it was built. Some people don't mind it but, particularly in the Viggen, it was over the top for me. The NG900 was a much smoother, well behaved car because it had 16" tires and not nearly as stiff a suspension as the Viggen.
It really depends what you want in a car. I think the 9-3SS from base to Aero handles way better than any of the hatch-based NG900/9-3s unless you do some serious suspension modifications. Additionally the hatch can be rattle-prone though some have good luck fixing this DIY. The epsilon platform that the 9-3SS is built on is a vast improvement over the old 9-3s. I would recommend test driving what you are interested in locally and then see how you feel. Only you'll know whether it's for you or not.
It's too bad that you keep having so many issues with your car. I've had a couple of things wrong with mine but currently it's in the shop for the first time (driver window regulator failed) since the 30 day checkup where they fixed a build issue with the sunroof. It's pretty obvious that the 2003 run of cars (first year) had some electrical glitches that have been ironed out in the later years. Personally I prefer the new models to the hatch, but not because I don't like the hatch. If they offered a hatch based car on the epsilon platform it would really be the SAAB to have. Hopefully we'll see it some day (I don't consider the SportCombi a hatch-based car - it's a wagon, but looks great).
Good luck whatever you decide,
John
