Sam, I wouldn't worry too much about viscosity ranges. Since the manual specs both a 5W-30 & 0W-40, any 5W-40 would cover the range of both. It seems to me that, besides the fuel savings offered by thinner oils, GM's enviro-spec wants an oil that will be guaranteed to last the entire interval, as monitored by their Oil Life System. IIRC, 0W-40 was not available here in the US until GM spec'd it for the Saab vehicles, & I'm not sure if there were any 5W-40s avaiable either. And since both of these 40 wt oils (& Amsoil's AFL) meet diesel specs, it's closer to what Saab has always spec'd in Europe.
I believe the manual allows you to use a non-GM/non-syn oil, as long as you disregard the OLS monitor & perform frequent oil changes. Would any of Mobil 1's new EP oils meet your needs? Probably. For me, I'd only use 5W-40 or 15W-50, regardless of what the manual said. Why? Because I know I'll never have an oil-related issue with either of these (Mobil 1) oils, & because I also know I'll get the best wear protection from these two choices. (15W-50 offers the best protection for Saab turbos IMO, & they're probably tied for longevity.) Stick with a long-life PAO syn that meets ACEA A3/B3/B4 (and/or E3) & you'll be well-protected.
