I have had experience with both of these models. I would choose the s40 AWD T5 hands down if you want a R series Volvo for a bargain price. The s40 AWD t5 will beat the snot out of any 9-3 including the Aero for straight line acceleration, road holding and track performance. I find the car's styling to be handsome. The s 40 is a smaller car however and the ride is on the stiff side, but if you have been driving a 94 to 01 900/9-3 with suspension mods, then the term stiff is relative as the s40 rides much better than the 99-01 9-3 canestoga wagon suspension does. That said, there is nothing Volvoesque about the s40s steering, it is spot on at speed and the turbo is very linear with a lot of torque down low off the line.
With 17" wheels, I feel the S 40 T5 AWD is a superior performance vehicle ot either the 9-2 Aero or the 9-3 Aero, and I never thought I would be forced to admit Volvo made a better performer with better looks.
I would recommend this comparison, compare the S40 T5 AWD to the S 60 R and then drive the Saab 9-2 Aero and the 9-3 SS Aero/Vector/Viggen and then see what you can actually buy one for. Go with the best overall value.
Ignore the silly discussion re platform sharing with low brow Mazdas and Fords as most Audis share platforms with VWs and no one would confuse an A-3 with Golf or a A-4 with a Jetta.
