is when you push down on the throttle without completely lifting your left foot from the clutch pedal. So the clutch parts aren't fully engaged and starts slipping against eachother, the friction wearing on the clutch material and heating it up. Slipping the clutch is a fast way to wear it out.
If you have a hard time starting up hills, try using the handbrake to hold the car instead of the clutch.
