TJP -
Just leased a 2006 9-3 2.0T Convertible. This is my third one, but first with new body style and interior. Some initial impressions:
1. Drove both models and really didn't feel that much of a difference between the engines. Certainly not enough to pay $4K more. However, you do give up a few comforts that were standard in the older SE's, like seat memory. Although, I understand they are bringing that back as an option later in '06.
2. Top operation, seat comfort and transmission are all serious upgrades over the older 9-3's. Only negative is that power steering is way overboosted. I wonder if that can be scaled back by the service guys?
3. Also seriously considered the BMW 325iC. I thought it was a nicer handling car and that BMW made far better use of lesser horsepower than Saab. But the price was way, way, out whack (over $200/month more on a 3 year lease) for what you get. But you can get Bluetooth and sattelite radio integrated into the car, which you can't get with Saab.
4. Also looked at the Audi A4 1.8T convertible. They wanted BMW money for a car which wasn't as nice as the 9-3 in any category, except the CVT transmission.
5. Still can't understand the corporate greed of GM. Difficult or impossible to get a hands-free set-up to work with the stereo, because GM is still trying to shove On-Star (which they own) down your throat, which is not even offered on 2006 9-3's.
Now for your questions:
1. Had very few mechanical problem with any of the 2 older 9-3 convertibles (2000 & 2003). Main complaint was with the windshield wiper nozzles which always clogged. That's fixed with the new car.
2. Excellent convertible top, never a problem. Just don't run it through a commercial car wash. Hand wash only.
3. Can't comment on the winter handling as I'm in Florida, and wouldn't dream of putting the top down when the temp is below 65.
4. The trunk on the new ones is adequate for most of my uses, certainly bigger than BMW or Audi. I'm relatively short, so headroom is not an issue, but taller friends don't seem to have a problem getting comfortable.
Overall, I think that Saab convertible is certainly the best value in its class. All of the other models you mentioned are much nicer vehicles (so long as you don't want a convertible) and are priced accordingly.
Good luck whatever you choose.
