The engine is made at an Opel (German GM) factory, although I beleive that the enginnering work is done in Sweden by Saab.
The transmissions on the older 9-3's were made by a company called Aisin-Warner, which is actually a subsidiary of Toyota. The older ones were similar to transmissions used in the last generation Lexus ES300's. I'm not sure if they are the supplier for the new 9-3's, but suspect they still are.
If you were to take apart the doors and other interior pieces, I'll bet that you would find a lot of parts made in Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Rep., Slovakia, etc.) due to lower labor costs than Sweden, Germany or Austria.
What other car can you say has major components made in Germany and Japan, is built in Austria (9-3 conv.) by a Swedish company, who owners are American?
It really is a small world after all.
