I have a 2005 9-3 aero and first oil change was to be at 24000k or 14000 miles but low oil signalled at 12000k to my shock. I am anal about checking the oil but did not as this car was new and my previous two 900's, both '83's, supposed same 2.0 L engine never moved on the dipstick ever even at 130000k. I love Saab and one reason was the reputation for bullet proof 2.0 L engine. I assumed that the problem was break in and likely 0W30 factory oil. Changed oil early at 18000k anyway and ignored the oil checks again(comfort level with a full warranty car which I have not had in 15yrs) and sure enough low oil flashed at 26000k. Filled another 2.5L of 5W30 this time and told the dealer. Dealer changed oil at 32000k and now right on schedule 6000k(3600 mi.) later I am down .5 quart. The dealer looked this up with headquarters and the max allowable consumption is about a liter every 8500k or a quart every 5000mi. therefore this unbelievable situation my not hit the warranty criterion. By the way the dealer used 0W40 in there change and still the consumption rages on at the same rate. I am not happy and find myself with fleeting thoughts of my last 12 yr old corolla(until I could get back to Saab) which I just tortured daily and never a drop lost. This car is past break in and no leaks and no turbo burn.
