My SO and I have an '01 9-3 SE and an '04 9-3 Aero 'vert between us. I have not had any major problems with my '04, she had a dead DI cassette on the highway that disabled her on an off-ramp, so in that sense, and in our personal experience (completely anecdotal) the '04 has been more reliable. As far as the quality ratings, were those for the '05, or maybe the '03s? The '03 was the first year of the new model and did have a lot of electrical issues that have mostly been sorted out for owners, and since '03 and '04, I hear that the reliability has improved quite a bit, so the '05s should be fine. I also owned a 2005 9-2X Aero for a year (and a WRX before that....) and really liked the 9-2x Aero. I've had a 9-2 linear as a loaner from my dealer and didn't love that, but the Aero was a stick (the reason I had to get rid of it - SO couldn't drive it) and the loaner linear was an auto. Our 2 current 9-3s are both autos, both completely acceptable to me. Personally, I like the way the '04 feels on the road more than the '01, it feels more connected and feels like it handles a lot better, and the suspension is tighter. But it's also an Aero, I can't speak for the linear, as I haven't driven one. Hope that helps some...
