XWD is not "full time AWD" like Audi or Subaru-but rather electronically controlled AWD on demand. XWD is basically FWD under normal driving conditions-until a computer senses slippage, then apportions torque to the rear and/or side-to-side as need be.
It seems to me that XWD was not designed for "rally conditions", but rather in deference to market forces (most of SAAB's competitors-Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Volvo-offer it) and the fact that FWD is inadequate for higher engine outputs that the market demands.
SAAB Corporate just doesn't have the money to sponsor rallies anymore (that's why they got out of it back in the 80s). They're bleeding red and need the cash for product development. The 9-5 is 10 years old (oldest car in its segment) and the 9-3 is 5 years old. We need new models, not rallies!
Audi (4 and 6), BMW (3 and 5 series), Infiniti (G series), M-B (C and E), Lexus (ES and IS), Volvo (S40, S80) have all replaced their lineups in the time the 9-5's been around.
