I remember that the fuel economy estimates for the 2005 2.0 T Arc and Aero were different. I believe it's because the gearing, (perhaps final drive ratio), were different. I think your car was rated at a few highway mpg lower than the Arc. If you go to fueleconomy.gov, you can look up the ratings. So I'm guessing you may not be doing anything wrong.
But in case you are, make sure you keep your throttle foot as steady as possible. Don't do the press and release method of driving. In fact constant throttle gets you better fuel economy than constant vehicle speed which as in what cruise control does. Also, accelerate gently, (when it's OK and you don't want to have some fun). Use engine braking instead of the vehicle brakes whenever possible. Reducing your momentum is detrimental to good fuel economy.
