Slow warm up

The 07 Saab 2.0T SS seems to warm up really slowly during freezing weather. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes driving for the fan to kick in while in auto mode. The temperature gauge never reach beyond half way mark even when fully warmed up. The Volvo S70 I used to own warms up in about 3 minutes, with the gauge going about 3/4 up. The Volvo is a 5 cylinder motor while the Saab's engine is a 4 cylinder. Is the slow warm-up normal, or do I have a defective thermostat?
Appreciate any advice
Louis H
