It is your steering wheel lock that binds under pressure of the steering wheel and lock interface. It can happen when you have only a slight amount of pressure from tire position. a slight tug on the steering wheel in the correct direction will free up the lock while you insert the key a second time.
I find with my automatic when I park and turn the tires to the curb to prevent a roll out or roll back if I put the vehicle in park, set the emergency brake, then remove my foot from the brake pedal I just jiggle the steering wheel to release tire pressure on the steering system then turn the engine off and remove the key it will not bind even though the wheels are turned sharply. You simply have to remove the tension on the steering system before the lock engages.
