I have a 2006 9-3SC with around 18,000 miles that my wife primarily drives, and a 2000 9-5 lpt Sedan with 216,700 miles that is my daily driver.
I believe in 5,000 mile oil changes, and use only synthetic oil. The 2.0 litre engine in the 9-3 requires 6 litres of oil with each oil change, so plan on $36 for oil and another $8 for the small filter (inexpensive filters for this motor don't exist). An oil change is an easy D-I-Y maintenance step.
As far as turbos go, the turbo in my 9-5 is factory original. The one-million mile Saab that was donated by its owner to the Saab museum in exchange for a new 9-5 still had its original turbo too. That being said, turbo failures are not unheard of.
The owner's manuals recommend premium fuel, and my 9-5 runs better in the summer with 93 octane, but I run 89 octane the rest of the year without any problems. On the few occassions when my wife has re-fueled her 9-3, she may have bought 87 octane. I never asked, she never said, and the car ran fine with whatever she bought.
Saab has more experience with turbo-charged engines than most other manufacturers. The "horror tales" of turbo ownership just aren't true.
