The algorithm takes into account trip distance and other things. It used to specify a change between 8,000 mi and 15,000 mi but starting with the 2006 model year, the maximum is 10,000 mi.
There is evidence that the infrequent oil changes are ok but there is also those who say that caution is not a bad thing to have. The oil capacity is somewhat higher at 6-6.3 qt and synthetic oil is specified so that points to a higher interval. Note that GM-LL-A-025 specficiation is mentioned which allows many motor oils to be used that are sold in Europe but only about 3 in the US. Mobil 1 0W40 is the only oil with somewhat widespread distribution. German made Castrol Syntec 0W30 European Formula, which is different from the mass market Castrol Syntec is hard to find. Elf brand is even more difficult to find. Saab Long Life Turbo motor oil is no longer available.
Initially, US Saab drivers will have free maintainence for 3 years. If the algorithm is pointing toward 10,000 mi, some will opt to change the oil at half that interval and possibly do it themselves.
The US state of California has started an advertising campaign encouraging less frequent oil changes because a significant number of people illegally and ruiniously dump oil into the ground or drain. Bringing it to quick oil change places, city toxic waste dump, or many auto parts stores is a free and easy way to dispose of used oil but some still persists in improper dumping. I am wary of the ad campaign since they won't help me if I have car trouble. I prefer to decide what's best for my car, not what's best for the advertising man. I do dispose of my oil properly.
