I've owned 2 Saab's with 2.3 Turbo engines. This is a great engine, but it's technology is getting very dated and Saab needed a new engine platform. I agree that in the market Saab will never be taken seriously with only 4-cylinders (don't get me wrong, I'm a huge advocate of the 4cyl turbo), but this is just the reality, esp in the automotive press.

The 2.3T is basically a modification of an engine designed in the early 1980's. At this point I think further redesign of this platform is too expensive and not realistic, so Saab went elsewhere.

The most annoying thing to me is that Saab/GM refuses to make the V6Turbo or the 2.0T produce more than 260HP b/c they don't want the 9-3 to exceed the HP offered in the "flagship" 9-5 model. Both the V6Turbo and 4cyl could produce at least 260HP (4cyl- see other Ecotecs like the Saturn Sky!=260hp) and 300HP+ for the V6.
