I agree with a good cleaning - I use Stoner Invisible Glass, which sometimes takes 2 tries to really get the windshield clean, but it seems to work well.
Some people use Rain-X, which does repel rain, but also steaks and fogs. I tried it once but resorted to using this product only on the windshield perimeter and other windows.
