I have a 2008 9-3 with xenons. The lights work differently than they did on my prior three Saabs.
The light switch still has three positions. The "on" and "parking" positions works just like a typical Saab of the past. The third position is labeled "auto." When in this position, depending on ambient lighting conditions when the car is running, the car will automatically shift between the xenon headlights and separate daytime running lights. So, when it gets dark outside, the DRL's go off and the xenons come on automatically. If it is daytime, but you enter a darker tunnel, the xenons quickly turn on and off (and the DRL's quickly turn off and on) as you enter and exit the tunnel.
For cars without xenons, when the switch is in the "auto" position, the headlights switch between full intensity (when it is dark) and a reduced intensity light (for daytime.)
For cars with automatic transmission, when you first start the car and the switch is in the "auto" position, neither the headlights or the DRL's will turn on until you put the car in gear. This enables you to run your engine without headlights (or DRL's.) For cars without auto trans, the lights won't go on until the parking brake is released.
