I just did this job again, because I had to update the installation for the iPhone 3G. In case anyone else is taking on that project, a couple things:
First, most car chargers that were sold for iPods won't work with the iPhone 3G. Including the Belkin mentioned earlier in this thread. You can play music from the iPhone 3G through the Belkin, but the iPhone won't charge.
If you're going to be doing this project to hook up an iPhone 3G, I'd recommend using the LiquidAUX from Kensington: model number 33429. (NOT the "LiquidAUX Deluxe," which is a completely different product.)
Also, I just realized that I failed to mention in the earlier exhaustive description of the installation procedure that before taking the CD player out of the dashboard, it's first necessary to remove the plastic panel containing the cigarette lighter, to get it out of the way. Otherwise, the upper lip of the cigarette lighter enclosure blocks the lower lip of the CD player, preventing removal. This is done by using a flat-blade screwdriver to release the tang on the left side (interior) of the cavity where you put your coins, next to the cigarette lighter itself, and then pulling (towards you, away from the dash) on the bottom edge of that cavity.
