Stan, your tip about trying to turn the locked steering wheel "even a little bit" was what did it for me tonight.
After spending the afternoon detailing my '03 2.0t 9.3, I too had the dreaded "Steering wheel lock..." message. I had turned my front wheels really far so it was easier to clean, dry, and wax them.
What worked for me was turning the wheels in the direction that didn't seem to make sense: they were turned too far to the left, and I was trying to turn them to the right to get the key delay to unlock. Turning the wheels even further to the left ultimately unlocked the steering wheel.
At first glance, it doesn't seem logical -- turning even further into the direction your wheels are locked -- but it worked like a charm. My key was finally recognized and I could start my car.
